One of the (many) things I've missed writing about the most over the past year or so - movie reviews. I'm a terrible critic - no way I can tell you specifically why I loved or didn't love a movie without going on and on and ON about crap you don't care about. However, I love to write about what real movie critics have to say about films. Good, bad, ugly. Doesn't matter. Just makes me happy.

So yesterday my heart soared when I got a chance to write about reviews of ''Inception.'' YAY. Literally, this made my writing day. And it didn't hurt that the reviews, so far, have been pretty bleepin' positive. I can assure you I've been waiting for this movie for a long time. Christopher Nolan, if you're out there I'm going all fan-girly and saying you are My. Fave. Evah. Wally Pfister? You are a genius, sir - I am in awe. I own every movie these two ever collaborated on...and I am pretty sure I'll own this one too.

As for the reviews - critics throwing around teases about bits of ''The Matrix,'' ''Memento'' and (gasp) ''Blade Runner?!'' I was planning on going a few days after Inception opens - now I'll be there for the FIRST showing. Yes yes. You start throwing around ''Blade Runner'' and I'm going to sprint to the theater. Might even buy snacks there, instead of smuggling them in my ginormous handbag (burrito wrappers, by the way, make way too much noise during quiet movie scenes).

After suffering through yet another damn ''Twilight'' movie, ''Inception'' shall be my reward.

Subject: More memories from the Greeks right on to Nassau
So there I am standing on a corner in Berkley California in for three days at the Greeks and a Peace walk (1988) in the Park and someone hollers "hey Paul" well I'm the only one on this particular corner on this partuicular day, on this particular moment, and my name happens to be Paul - guess I'll turn around - and off we went like a shot - Janice my old friend from school, the radio station and back east - so's ya know the Dead always do this - to all of us - but you knew that - anyway - off to New Orleans in the Fall for the Lake Front Show - on the floor running around - dancing madly - local television filming us - stuff that back in your fanny pack dude - your on T.V. - small venue 5,000 (I think) joy, and back on Bourbon street hanging out with Kreutzman - two nights in a row - meeting at the same spot(?) - LOL - make it stop - no don't - hey bill we gotta stop meeting like this - sharing drinks - I'll come by the studio next time I'm in town - yeah right Billy - we still love you anyway - Janice wants to know where Brent is - me Billy, and Healy laugh, full belly laughs and its always the way.. and off we go - phone rings "Paul got tix's to Nassau want to drive up" - muffler falls off on the island - the car - keep in mind it's a mercury lynx with over 80,000 miles on it - and I drove that sucker to Buffalo 7-16-1990 - "you drove THAT car to Buffalo- I wouldn't have driven it around the block!" - my stage hand friend says - and well I miss Jeff too - lots of fun great story's and Janice thank you for this show and running with me for a few brief moments back then - I miss hearing from you - say hello sometime - it'll probably be some corner, some sunny day.
This show is a true gem - I love the song selections and Branford just kept that whole New Orleans vibe going - Jerry definitely was playing with his toys that night and Dark Star to boot - the sound of this mix is great. It's about the experience - it's about the trip - connoisseurs can rap and slap this, that and the other tech kind a thing - but if finding this show and hearing this show slaps a big old dumb grin on your face - you can't wipe off - then trade for it or blanks and postage a kind friend. It's about the vibe and to the extent that this database and the beautiful souls that populated it help re-kindle that vibe, that fire, that passion, that insight, that reminder that something greater than the whole can happen and should well - it's a better world for it back in the moment then and now - keep it positive thoughts like ripples on still water - echo out permeating all.

Subject: Among the best I ever saw!
This show ranks in my top 5 of all time, for shows that I attended.
It is really tight throughout, and the jamming is quite out there with the unique help of Branford.
In response to someone who believes that it deserves the same recognition os the Barton Hall, Cornell show of the 1977 spring run, it's like apples and oranges. Also, this show did not circulate widely as a sbd, while everyone had a crispy cassette of Cornell.
It certainly has stood the test of time! And there are other great East Coast shows from the same run, and for the next year, so there are many other shows that get recognition.

only one in the new haven area who did, but a soundbord quality tape made it back and was the center of attention for some real wild times starting the next morning. remember getting chills just reading branford marsalis' impressions of playing with the boys and in front of the crowd. mmm-mmmm.

I went through all the labor of figuring out when was the last Nassau Dark Star. I spray painted a huge bed sheet and I intended to hang it from the rafters. showed a few folks before the show who just laughed at me. long story short -I had really good seats and the show was so hot I totally spaced putting up the banner.

I was there that night. Didn't remember much about the first set, beyond the fact that it closed w/ masterpiece/bird song promised land. Second set was unbelieveable. I'm not sure why they put Eyes from the second set on w/out a net....Birdsong was FAR better. Anyhow, this one was memorable for sure. Branford was an awesome addition, adding just enough...but never overpowering.

Subject: Has it been almost 17 years already?
Dead shows were selling out so fast in those days. First I got a credit card but began getting shut out by TicketBastard the first hour or sooner the show went on sale via telephone. You had to get tickets via GDTS to be assured getting your golden tickets. I bought any tickets within 100 miles and put off the logistics of getting there until later. Fucking Branford Marsalis playing with the Dead. Jerry was really happy to have him there, I could tell. I think they both were a little bit nervous or just not so rehearsed, but it gave a very loose, jamming and exploratory feeling that had been missing and such giant talents playing together were bound to yield some real gems. Branford's soprano sax always had given me chills and it really inspired Jerry... that midi flute on his guitar was incredible. Can you say jazz and eyes? Worlds colliding. So unusual but so perfect. I tripped out on the Eyes > Estimated little reversal thing. Then Dark Star.

Subject: Oh, What a Night!
19 years old, attending Nassau Community College, which is right next door. Blew off lacrosse practice, sold some textbooks to get money for the evening and headed over to the Coliseum. Had been to the opening night show which was Wednesday the 28th! Good show, stayed pretty straight for that one. The same cannot be said for this Thursday night! First off, soo many more people showed up for this night. The lot is packed. Find some doses, and head to the show. I'm getting a drink when I hear the opening notes of Jack Straw.. complete pandamonium! I was about 25 rows out, my mind was awash in color! The lights and the sounds changed my life forever! I really don't remember much of the first set, I was completely out of my mind. I had no idea Branford played during the first set. Promised Land rocked me to my soul!
The second set was ATOMIC! I love that description! I rember one awkward moment where Jerry kind of bungles a line in Dark Star and Weir got pissed and sat down on a case throughout the remainder of the song. Then he capped the night w/ an intense Throwing Stones>Lovelight! I had some girl blowing on my neck trying to cool me down during Knockin' on Heavens Door. It was a magical night. After the show was over, I very slowly drove to my neighborhood bar that served minors, and all my friends were getting drunk dancing to whatever, Led Zepplin, and they asked how the show was.... All I could do was smile, smile, smile!

Subject: My first Dead show!
Man was I blessed to have this show as my first Grateful Dead experience. I was a senior in High School in 1990 and this show changed my life! Branford Marsalis graced the Long Island stage for the first notes in "Birdsong" and blew notes for the rest of our evening. The "Eyes of the World" from this performance made the cut on the "Without A Net" live release. I give it a 5 star rating not on the recording but on it's experience in my life!

to quote my favorite sportscaster of all time, "oohhhh my". been waiting to get a complete show of this for years now. This is what is all about. The only reason why this isn't mentioned in the same breath as 5/8/77 is Cornell's epic first set as well. this second set is Atomic. Worth every bit of hype this show has gotten over the years. This is "dead101" A MUST for anyone who is into this band.
Funny, even if people feel this is overrated(which is fine) to only have 25 reviews for what has to be considered a historic evening is a bit shocking. Then to look at the last gig they played at soldier field which is a sub par performance to say the least and have 200 plus reviews is bizarre. Oh well their loss.

Those of you who know me well realize that I'm not just a Springsteen fanatic. No no, I'm much more than that. I'm also a former Deadhead. Well, are you ever a former Deadhead? Whatever the case, I've been revisiting my youth for weeks now - I do this each spring, it seems, as that's when we did the most Dead touring. I wish we'd done even more. This March 29, 1990 show from Nassau Colesium remains one of my favorite Dead shows ever. Second set featured Branford Marsalis (Eyes, Eyes, EYES) but honestly, the FIRST set gets overlooked far too often. Effing TIGHT ass start with Jack Straw/Bertha and man I love Brent Mydland's We Can Run. And Masterpiece?

Salmonella Scare Prompts Pringles Recall

The Procter & Gamble company has announced a voluntary recall of two types of Pringles potato chips amid concerns of possible salmonella contamination. The recall, announced on March 8, 2010, affects Pringles Restaurant Cravers Cheeseburger and Family Faves Taco Night flavors of the chips. The decision to recall the Pringles chips was made after it was discovered that a Las Vegas-based company's hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) might be contaminated with salmonella found on plant equipment. Procter & Gamble's decision to recall the two Pringles varities was made on a recommendation from the FDA. So. I'm a coffee addict. Not like the cup by cup - more like open mouth, pour in entire pot kinda gal. I'm seriously wondering if I'd like this whole Keurig/K Cups thing. I did some research and obviously coupons for K Cups are IN HIGH demand, so the system isn't cheap. I just can't help but wonder whether brewing cup by cup really would make that much of a difference? If anyone has one of these gizmos, please let me know. If it's seriously THAT awesome I swear I'd be willing to invest.

It seems the pilot who crashed his small plane into an IRS building in Austin, Texas, today left behind a disturbing (understatement) "manifesto" detailing his grievances with rants against everyone from the IRS to the Catholic Church and beyond. Interesting to read editorials already on this, with the left screaming that the guy was a dangerous Tea Bagger filled with hate and the right hollering that he was another example of a liberal hater. Everyone's gonna have a spin on this and no doubt it'll be the subject of much "debate" (using this term loosely, very loosely) on FOX News, MSNBC, etc. and ad nauseum. What do you think? Personally I think I'm going to just read this basic information WITHOUT the editorializing and wait for the story to play out, watching all the while as media folks attempt to score political points as they "analyze" the "facts" in the case. Ad nauseum.

How to Make Rice Krispie Treats

So. I'm not known for my outstanding cooking skills - I feel the need to admit this off the bat here. However, for some reason around the holidays I begin to believe I can actually pull a few recipes off. Sometimes this works - most of the time, it doesn't. I blame Rice Krispies. Years ago, I began making Rice Krispies Treats with my mom - just like millions of other little kids. And now? I still make them, especially during the holidays. I decided to write about how to make rice krispie treats. Me? The non-cooker? Yes. Once I started really researching a little I found out about a LOT of really cool ideas for decorating the treats, which taste great but (IMO) aren't exactly the prettiest things in the world. See if you agree with some of the "variations" I found - if you have any others, please let me know. I'm having a BLAST with these now. Made a batch yesterday and turned them into little holiday packages, complete with Twizzlers bows!

Garth Brooks Las Vegas Tickets

As most of you have probably heard by now, Garth Brooks has come out of retirement - officially. Not for like one show, either. A bunch. A wholllllllle bunch of shows at the Wynn in Las Vegas, in fact. A standing engagement, open-ended. The shows begin on December 11, 2009, and will be weekends-only. Acoustic. Should be fantastic and this is a HUGE deal for Garth fans. Tickets to Brooks' first five weeks of Wynn Las Vegas shows go on sale tomorrow. 8 a.m., PST. Okay I'll confess I heart a damn fine scandal, and Stephanie Birkitt's smack in the middle of a real doozy. Short version: Birkitt was Letterman's intern, they supposedly played footsie for a while, she took up with the guy that's now accused of blackmailing Letterman for $2 million. Supposedly (again w/the supposedly) Birkitt kept a diary and correspondence that might have tipped off blackmailer guy (a.k.a. Robert Halderman, CBS producer) to her clandestine hookup with Letterman. Which I still don't get. Anyway, that's who she is, in case you were wondering. Weekly smarmfest, over.

Brandon Deaderick Shot

University of Alabama football player Brandon Deaderick was shot during an apparent robbery attempt at an apartment complex in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on the evening of August 31, 2009.

According to reports, the 22-year-old Deaderick was shot in the forearm as he and an unidentified woman sat in a car outside the Rivermont Apartments on Rice Mine Road. Deaderick—a defensive end for the Alabama Crimson Tide— was taken to a local hospital for treatment; a spokesperson said he was in "good" condition.

And there was SO much rejoicing. Serioiusly look people - this was MY favorite show from the late 80s and that was when I was NOT 30-something. I've been waiting for more than a decade for this show to finally come out on DVD...and was praying it would hit shelves before I left the 30-something world for the 40-somethings (shudder). Yes, I know they were affluent baby boomers, yuppies if you will, who whined incessantly. I don't give a rip. I loved it, I loved the cast and I never missed an episode in four years. I am leaving the SECOND I get off work to go get this...the very second. And tonight? This 30-something will be watching my favorite fictional "thirtysomethings" whine their heads off and loving every single second of it.

Is it too much to ask that our players stay out of jail if they can? At least steer clear of the law during football season guys. FYI: reports say Upshaw will NOT be suspended - just a guess here, but a $500 bond doesn't lead me to believe this was a major altercation. Let's hope not.

Big fat interview FAIL from ABC News reporter Dan Harris. He was discussing ''Entourage'' with Jamie Lynn Sigler - didn't know she was dating Jerry Ferrara (Turtle). Harris asks her "On the show, you're Turtle's (Jerry Ferrara) girlfriend, In real life, do you think beautiful women do or would date fat dudes?" And it just goes downhill from there. Just one of those cringeworthy things to watch. Get the same unsettled feeling I get from "Curb Your Enthusiasm." Big oops Dan, get thee a copy of People Magazine!

According to Oprah this is the "most anticipated music interview of the decade." Um. K. Maybe to some. But personally I'm already SICK of hearing about Whitney, her comeback, etc etc. For Houston fans though, this is a big deal I suppose. Wonder what the stipulations are for the sit down? I mean can Oprah ask whatever she wants? Are we gonna get the gritty, tough questions about Houston's past history? Can't wait. Stay tuned.

I think I'm old and completely out of the loop - or I don't have small children singing this song in my car/house. What is the Helen Keller dance, you ask? It's part of a chorus of the pop-duo 30h!3's song "Don't Trust Me." The lyrics: "Shush girl, shut your lips. Do the Helen Keller and talk with your hips." Not sure whether I'm offended or if I think this is funny - but with all the parodies cropping up, I am sure people continue to have way too much time on their hands. Oooooh weee. Yesterday we had the Murray video thanking everyone for their support...saying he was afraid to answer the phone or check email. No wonder! FOX is indeed reporting that Murray will be indicted within a couple of weeks - will they wait until after MJ's burial on the 29th? Stay tuned.

You'll remember Dr. Conrad Murray as Michael Jackson's personal physician - you know, the one with him right before he died? We haven't heard from him since Jackson's passing back in June - but today he released a video thanking his fans and supporters. Apparently he felt compelled to do this because he's "afraid to return phone calls and use e-mail." More like his attorneys have told him not to return phone calls or emails.

With my family roots branching from New Orleans to little ol' Kiln, Mississippi, I've always taken a great interest in Brett Favre. And of course, I've seen the guy play since his college days, when he was scaring the CRAP out of Alabama as a QC for So. Miss back in the day (and no it wasn't THAT long ago, I'm not THAT old). I've always been a fan - I've supported him through those bumpy early NFL years, cried when he played against Oakland right after his daddy died, and celebrated each touchdown with him. But really. Really? Let it alone, Brett. I'm going to have to let you go now. I sort of understood about the Jets...but I'm not sure I can forgive the Vikings move. I hope Green Bay KILLS Minnesota this year.

John Hughes' Many, Many Films

I think many of us who consider ourselves members of the so-called "Generation X" were absolutely rocked yesterday when news broke that writer/director/producer John Hughes had died. Many of us knew Hughes was responsible for ''The Breakfast Club,'' ''Pretty in Pink',' ''Sixteen Candles'' and oh yeah ''Ferris Bueller's Day Off.'' Yep yep. Knew those. Some of us also knew about ''Planes, Trains & Automobiles'' and ''Some Kind of Wonderful'' (I loved Watts, I really did). But did you know that Hughes wrote the HI-larious scripts for the ''National Lampoon's Vacation'' movies? Or that he penned the ''Home Alone'' film franchise? Yeah, he totally did.

In short, I heart John Hughes movies and I've never ever, for one second, been ashamed of it. Not when my snooty, high-falutin' film geek buddies reminded me that none of his movies ever won an Academy Award. So what? Truth be told, his movies gave me MANY more hours of great entertainment than most of the Oscar winners I've seen. So there. Pfffft!

I don't think I'm alone when I say that while I own a LOT of these DVDs, I'm gonna be getting a lot more of them in coming weeks. I'll need a new DVD cabinet just to hold them all, too. And it'll be pink. And I'll sit and visit with my old friends Watts, Duckie, Samantha, Long Duk Dong, The Geek, Ferris and Claire. And I still lust after Jake Ryan, btw.

NJ Politician Joseph Doria Out Amid Corruption Probe

Wow, what a corruption probe in New Jersey (I know, shocking isn't it?). Lots and lots of folks rounded up by the FBI in a big raid earlier today, and as a result, Governor Corzine's likely spent the better part of his afternoon reading arrest reports and resignation letters. One of those letters was from former Jersey Department of Community Affairs Commissioner Joseph Doria. NJ.com's saying that Doria (a former state senator) "is not among the 44 people identified as charged in the corruption investigation." Corzine wanted him out anyway. I'm thinking we don't quite have the whole story yet. Stay tuned.

Springsteen is probably holed up in a little closet in Rumson furiously scribbling out lyrics for another "Atlantic City."

Charlotte Sellmyer is all the rage on Capitol Hill these days. She's a 23-year-old aide to Texas Congressman Lamar Smith - and she's a budding photographer. Sellmyer is becoming quite popular among her fellow staffers for her photos, and word is spreading that she really is that good. What's amazing to me is that she has no professional training - just a great deal of natural artistic ability.

Me thinks she won't be a Congressional staffer for much longer - I see a gallery in her future.

The Finepix Real 3D W1 from Fujifilm

This baby takes photos and video in 3D. I am serious - no glasses required! Can you imagine? So far no info on a U.S. sale date, but the camera is set to go on sale in Great Britain in September. The cost, you say? Around $944. Obviously that is extremely pricey, but did I mention already that this thing takes photos in 3D? Oh, I see I did.

Time to break out that list for Santa. July isn't too early, is it?
